FYI: The Dooly County Health Department has extended their hours on Tuesday, July 25th & Thursday, July 27th till 7 p.m. for "Back to School" vaccinations.


Dooly County Schools kicked off the 2024 school year with a new hire/teacher orientation at the Dooly K-8 Academy on Thursday, July 20th. We thank GAE and PAGE for providing breakfast and lunch. We also thank our community partners (Middle GA EMC, Dooly Co. Extension Office, Cadence Bank, Dooly County Chamber, Dooly County Family Connection, Gateway Center, Ellis Pecans, City of Unadilla, and the City of Vienna) for the great "swag bags" for our new teachers. We are excited and ready for the new school year.

Dooly County Schools is providing book bags and supplies again this year. Here is the K-8 Academy's classroom supply wish list for grades Pre-K through 8th grades.
Students will receive their book bags and supplies on the first day of school.

Dooly K-8 leaders and educators were honored to present our Dooly story of hard work and resilience on the international stage at the 2023 Model Schools' Conference in Orlando, FLA. Presenting at the conference from Dooly County Schools were Dr. Sherrod Willaford, Interim Superintendent, Dr. Hollie Walters, Principal, and Mrs. Kylie Garrard, Teacher. We were able to inspire over 1,200+ educators from all over the world as well as ourselves.

Dr. Sherrod Willaford named Interim Superintendent of Dooly County School System
On June 22, 2023, the Dooly County Board of Education unanimously approved Dr. Sherrod Willaford as Interim Superintendent of the Dooly County School System. Dr. Willaford most recently served as Assistant Superintendent of Schools and Principal of Dooly K-8 Academy. Dr. Willaford is a 26-year veteran educator in public education, having served for 18 years as a public-school administrator. During his career, he previously served as an award-winning, accomplished Principal in Georgia schools and as an Executive Director in Norfolk, Virginia Public Schools for three years. Under his leadership, he led the elementary and middle schools to being successfully removed from the GaDOE Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) list of lowest performing schools in 2022. He is leading the district’s Cognia Accreditation process that will take place in 2023-24 and oversees the current facility and athletic upgrades in the district.
“I am honored to serve the students, staff, and families of Dooly County,” stated Dr. Willaford. “I am looking forward to continuing to work with the local governance team and keep moving the district in a forward direction.”
Dr. Willaford has two children and is married to Dr. Chara Willaford, a fellow educator. Dr. Willaford received his Bachelor’s degree from Clark Atlanta University. He earned his Master’s degree and a Doctorate of Education in School Improvement from the University of West Georgia. Dr. Willaford is also a graduate of the first cohort of the nationally renowned AASA Superintendent’s Program and is a member of the Georgia School Superintendent’s Association.

As a reminder, Dooly Schools will be closed on Monday, June 19th for the Juneteenth Federal Holiday. We will welcome students back on Tuesday, June 20th. With the threat of potentially severe thunderstorms today, Wed., June 14th, DCSS will postpone the Book Bus scheduled for the Vienna Park and Pinehurst bus route. Updates to come.

The DCSS book bus is headed today, June 13th, to Byromville Park and on the Lilly bus route. Come on out for some great books and a cool snack!

This is a reminder of today's mandatory summer program parent and student orientation sessions for all students participating in the program. Today's session will take place Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at 5:00 P.M., in person at the Dooly K-8 cafeteria. Our second session will be held tomorrow, Thursday, May 25, 2023, at 9:00 A.M. in person and with a virtual option.
