The recently released Spring 2024 Georgia Milestones (GMAS) scores have brought encouraging news to the Dooly County School System, with significant gains observed in several key areas, particularly in English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies. The scores reflect the dedication and collaborative efforts of school administrators, instructional specialists, teachers, students, and their families, and the effective implementation of new educational initiatives.
Notable Gains in English Language Arts
Out of the seven ELA assessments, five showed marked improvement compared to last year’s performance. Particularly impressive were the double-digit gains in the 8th grade ELA scores and a nearly 30% increase in American Literature scores, signaling substantial progress in these critical areas.
GMAS Lexile scores, a measure of reading ability, also reflected this upward trend. Five out of the seven assessments maintained or demonstrated improvement, with 3rd grade, 8th grade, and American Literature all achieving double-digit gains.
The 8th-grade Social Studies assessment showed a 17% increase, aligning with the Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) average, while US History scores improved by 14% compared to last year. These gains underscore the district's commitment to enhancing students' understanding of social studies content and preparing them for future academic challenges.
District Leadership Acknowledges the Success
As the district continues to analyze the results and plan for future improvements, the Spring 2024 GMAS scores provide a solid foundation for continued academic growth. The focus on literacy, combined with strategic partnerships and innovative educational practices, is paving the way for sustained success in the years to come.
